What It Does
Paste a link, and the code is encoded and rebuilt live as a printable plate: a background slab with the QR modules raised on top of it in a second colour, plus an optional caption underneath. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded, and the plate is built as a 3MF with each part already assigned to a filament slot. Designing here is free and there is no sign-up. Keeping the file is not: order the plate printed by us and the download comes with it, or buy a licence for the file on its own. Printed QR codes are useful in the places a sticker fails: outdoors, on machinery, on a bin that gets washed, or anywhere a label needs to survive being handled.
Encoding and Error Correction
The code is generated in byte mode, so any link or plain text works, and the QR version steps up automatically as the content gets longer. Error correction runs from L to H: higher levels survive more damage but pack more modules into the same plate, so each module gets smaller and harder to print. M is the sweet spot for a printed part, since the geometry is rigid and a printed code does not scuff the way a paper one does. Keep the URL short if you can, because a shorter link is a coarser grid, and a coarser grid is a more reliable print.
Colour and Contrast
Scanners read brightness, not hue, so any colour pair works as long as one is clearly darker than the other. Set the background, code and caption colours independently and watch the contrast reading: the tool flags a pair that is too close, and stops you outright if the polarity is inverted, because a light code on a dark background will not read on most phones. If you want an unusual colourway, put the strong colour behind and the dark one on the modules rather than the other way around.
Module Size and Quiet Zone
The one thing that decides whether a printed code scans is how wide each module is relative to your nozzle. Anything narrower than about three extrusion lines comes out rounded and mushy, and the tool warns you when the plate size and QR version combine to push past that. The fix is always the same: make the plate bigger, shorten the link, or drop the error correction level. The quiet zone is adjustable from two to six modules, with four being the standard margin; going below that saves plate area but starts to cost you reliability with cheaper scanners.
Caption and Plate Shape
A raised caption sits below the code in its own colour, in one of four faces, and is worth adding because a bare QR plate on a wall tells nobody what it is for. Plate size, corner fillet and the layer heights of the base and code are all adjustable, so you can match an existing sign or keep a set of plates consistent.
Printing It in Two Colours
The 3MF is a single object with separate parts for the base, code and caption, each with its filament slot set, which is what a multi-material printer needs to colour them without you doing anything in the slicer. If Bambu Studio asks whether to load as one object with multiple parts, say yes; choosing geometry only drops the slot assignments. On a single extruder printer you do not need any of that — the tool tells you the exact Z height where the code starts, so you insert one colour change at that layer and the plate comes out two-tone anyway. That route works on every slicer and every printer.
Materials
PLA is fine for anything indoors and gives the crispest module edges. For a plate that lives outside, use PETG: PLA will soften and distort in direct summer sun, and a warped QR plate stops scanning long before it looks broken. Matte filaments scan noticeably better than glossy ones, because a shiny plate throws highlights that confuse the camera. The plate sits flat on the bed and needs no supports anywhere.
