What It Does
A knob is the cheapest usability upgrade there is. Anything adjusted more than once a week deserves something you can turn with your fingers instead of hunting for a spanner, and the trick is that you do not need to print a thread to get one: capture an ordinary hex nut or bolt head inside the plastic and the steel does the work. This generator builds that part to size, live in the 3D viewport, entirely in your browser, and nothing is uploaded. Designing here is free and there is no sign-up. Grip Styles
Knurled gives a fine ribbed rim, the familiar camera and instrument look, and is best where the knob is turned often but never hard. Lobed gives three or more rounded lobes for a firmer purchase with wet or gloved hands, which is why it shows up on clamps and jigs. Wing gives two flat blades and the most leverage of the three, so it is the choice for anything that needs to be genuinely nipped up: fence stops, tripod plates, machine guards. Pick the style for the torque you need, then set the diameter to suit the hand rather than the fastener, because a wider knob is a bigger lever.
Capturing a Nut or Bolt Head
Choose your thread size from M3 to M12 and the generator places a hexagonal pocket sized across the flats for the corresponding standard nut, with the bore running through to match. Select bolt-head capture instead and the pocket takes the head of a hex bolt, turning the knob into a thumbscrew you can fit and forget. Press the nut in cold with a vice or a smear of adhesive; if it will see repeated loosening in both directions, a drop of epoxy behind it stops the nut spinning in its pocket, which is the one failure mode these parts have.
Bore, Chamfer and Skirt
The clearance bore can run all the way through, which is what you want on a thumbscrew or where the shaft protrudes, or stop blind so the top face stays clean and nothing catches. A top chamfer takes the sharp edge off the rim so the knob is comfortable to grip hard, and a skirt taper flares the underside so the knob does not bind on a panel or washer face as it is tightened down. Grip depth controls how far the knurls, lobes or wings cut in: deeper gives more purchase and a less comfortable edge.
Torque, Strength and Print Orientation
Print the knob with the nut pocket facing the build plate. The pocket then needs no supports, the first layer gives you a flat bearing face, and the plastic around the nut is loaded across the layers rather than being peeled apart by them. Use four perimeters: on a knob almost all of the torque is carried by the outer shell, so perimeter count matters far more than infill density. Printed knobs will happily do finger-tight and hand-tight duty for years, but they are not a substitute for a torque wrench, and a knob spun up hard against a metal face will eventually round its nut pocket.
Materials
PETG is the sensible default: tough, slightly forgiving and it will not creep if the knob sits under load for months. PLA is fine indoors and prints the crispest knurl, but it softens in a car or a sunny window and creeps under sustained clamping pressure. Nylon PA12 and PAHT-CF are worth it for workshop fixtures, jigs and anything handled with oily hands, where the extra stiffness and wear resistance shows. TPU is too soft for a knob, though it makes a good over-moulded sleeve if you want more friction.
