What It Does

Gridfinity only works if every part obeys the same grid, which is exactly the sort of thing worth generating rather than modelling by hand. Choose a footprint in grid units, set the height, add dividers, and a standard-compliant bin is rebuilt live in the 3D viewport. Switch to baseplate mode and the same footprint becomes a plate of sockets for the bins to drop into. It runs entirely in your browser and nothing is uploaded. The Standard It Follows

Gridfinity is an open modular storage system built on a 42 mm square grid, with bin heights in 7 mm steps and a profiled base that seats into a matching baseplate socket. The stacking lip on top of each bin mirrors that base profile, so bins stack on each other as well as into a plate. This generator produces geometry compatible with the published specification, which means the bins you make here sit alongside anything else in your drawer that follows the same standard.

Bins, Heights and Dividers

Footprints run from 1x1 up to 6x6 grid units, which is 42 mm to 252 mm square. Height is set in standard 7 mm units rather than millimetres, so a 3-unit bin is 21 mm of usable depth plus the base profile: use shallow bins for screws and SMD parts where you want to see everything at a glance, and tall ones for drill bits, connectors and anything that stands up. Dividers split the cavity into compartments, which is how a single 2x2 bin becomes a sorted set of four fastener sizes instead of one mixed pile.

Magnet Holes

Optional 6.5 mm recesses in the base take standard 6 mm diameter magnets. The hole is deliberately a little larger than the magnet so it drops in without hammering, which means a spot of cyanoacrylate or epoxy is what actually retains it. Check the polarity is consistent before you glue anything: a bin with one magnet reversed will lift a corner off the plate and never seat properly. Magnets are worth it for plates that get carried or tipped, and unnecessary for a drawer that stays flat.

Baseplates

Baseplate mode generates the sockets the bins seat into. Work out your drawer's internal size, divide by 42, and round down: a 320 mm drawer takes seven grid units across with 26 mm to spare. Print plates in modules and butt them together rather than trying to make one enormous plate, because a two-piece plate prints faster, warps less and survives a change of drawer.

Print Settings

Bins are one of the easiest things an FDM printer does. Three perimeters, 10 to 15 percent infill and a 0.2 mm layer height is plenty, and the profiled base and stacking lip are chamfered rather than overhanging, so no supports are needed anywhere. If your bins feel loose in the plate, the usual culprit is over-extrusion rounding the base profile rather than the model itself. A live readout gives the total volume, estimated mass per material and the facet count, which is a useful sanity check before you commit to a plate of twelve of them.

Materials

PLA is the right default here and the one the system was designed around: it is stiff, cheap, dimensionally accurate and holds a crisp lip. PETG is worth the extra for bins that hold oily parts, solvents or anything sharp, and it survives a hot garage in a Canterbury summer far better than PLA. TPU makes a soft-bottomed insert for delicate instruments. Carbon-filled nylon is overkill for storage and the abrasive filler will scuff the mating profile over time.
