What It Does

Give it a picture and it gives you a cutter. The tool finds the outline in your image, cleans it up, and builds that shape into either a cookie cutter with a proper tapered cutting edge or a solid embossing stamp die on a backing plate. The traced outline is shown live so you can see what the geometry will actually be before you commit, and the tracing happens entirely in your browser, so nothing is uploaded. Tracing an Image

The tracer works on silhouettes, so it wants a clear dark shape against a light background. A logo, a black-and-white clip-art outline, a child's drawing scanned on white paper, or a photo with the background removed are all ideal. A busy photograph is not: there is no single boundary to find. The threshold control decides where the boundary between light and dark sits, and it is the first slider to reach for when the outline comes out fragmented or bloated. Nudge it until the preview shows one clean, closed contour.

Smoothing and Detail

Traced outlines start out jagged, because they follow pixel boundaries. The smoothing slider rounds that staircase off, and the detail slider simplifies the contour by removing points that do not change the shape. Both matter more than they look: too much detail gives you a cutter with hundreds of tiny wobbles that will not print cleanly and will not release dough, and too much smoothing turns a recognisable shape into a blob. Aim for the least detail that still reads as the thing it is meant to be, then check narrow features such as ears, tails and letter counters, because anything narrower than about 3 mm will not cut a workable piece of dough regardless of how well it prints.

Cutter Mode

In cutter mode the outline becomes a wall that sits on a wide flange at the bottom and tapers to a cutting edge at the top. The taper is what lets the cutter slice rather than crush, and the flange is what lets you press it down with the heel of your hand without the wall cutting into you. A wall of around 0.8 to 1.2 mm and a total height of 12 to 15 mm suits normal biscuit dough. Deeper is not better: a tall cutter traps dough and is harder to release.

Stamp Mode

Stamp mode builds the silhouette as a solid raised face on a backing plate, with no handle, so the die beds into a holder you print separately, for embossing a pattern into dough, fondant or clay rather than cutting it out. Because the whole shape is solid, stamps tolerate finer detail than cutters do, but the same lower limit applies to the depth of relief: features shallower than three or four layers will not leave a mark you can see. Stamps and cutters are often used as a pair, cutting the shape first and then embossing it.

Sizing and Print Settings

Scale the whole thing to a target width in millimetres and the aspect ratio follows. Print cutters exactly as generated, with the flange flat on the build plate and the cutting edge uppermost: the wide flange doubles as a first layer that stops a tall thin cutter peeling off the bed, the edge prints last, and no supports are needed anywhere. Two perimeters and no infill is the right setting for a cutter wall, and a 0.2 mm layer height is plenty. An optional chamfer around the bottom edge takes the squashed first layer back in flush so the cutter sits flat. Stamps also print exactly as generated, backing plate down and relief upwards, where every face of the relief is vertical so nothing overhangs. A live readout shows volume, estimated mass per material and the facet count of the generated mesh.

Food Safety and Cleaning

Be honest about what an FDM printed cutter is. The layer lines give bacteria somewhere to sit, and standard filament is not certified food-contact material even when the base polymer is considered food-safe, because of colourants, additives and whatever the brass nozzle contributed on the way out. That is an acceptable risk for brief contact with dough that is about to be baked, which is what a cutter does. It is not acceptable for storing food, for anything that will be eaten uncooked, or for repeated use over months. Wash by hand in cool soapy water immediately after use, never in a dishwasher, where the heat will warp PLA and the detergent will find every crevice. Dry it properly and replace it when it looks tired.

Materials

PLA is the usual choice: it is stiff, it holds a crisp edge, it is cheap enough to treat as semi-disposable, and it prints the smallest detail. Its weakness is heat, so keep it away from hot water and dishwashers. PETG is tougher, tolerates warm washing far better and is the better pick for a cutter you expect to reuse for a whole season of baking, at the cost of very slightly softer detail. Avoid carbon-filled and abrasive-filled materials entirely for anything touching food.
